Charles G. Buckingham was born at Van Wert, Ohio, in 1846. He left Kenyon College, Ohio, in his sophomore year due to health problems and worked for 6 months at the First National Bank of Van Wert. He moved to Colorado in 1870 with Dr. Charles Emerson to join the Union Colony in Greeley. With H. T. West, the men established the banking firm of Emerson, West and Buckingham. Charles G. Buckingham and his younger brother Walter founded the Buckingham Brothers' bank in Boulder, Colorado, in 1874. This became the National State bank in 1877, then the First National bank in Boulder after a reorganization in 1933- 1934. Charles G. Buckingham was reputed to have been the oldest banker in the United States. His nephew Charles E.
